Good "Reunion" Foods
Here are some of Mister Spiffy's "reunion" foods. What is a
"reunion" food, you ask? First, it has to taste good. Second,
it has to be filling (at least if it's a main course). Third,
it can't cost a fortune. And most importantly, it has to be
fairly easy to cook in a large quantity.
Hamburgers and Hot Dogs
OK, so this is a no brainer. Barbecues or campfires, hamburgers
and hot dogs are the best choice for dinners. Hot dogs are nice.
You just shove ‘em on a stick and roast ‘em on a fire. With
hamburgers you just put ‘em on a grill. Then you take a bun and
fixins’, and tada. Simple, eh?
Corn on the cob
Everyone loves corn on the cob, even Uncle Joe and his dentures.
Just get a huge pot, fill it with water, and drop a bunch of corn
in. The only time consuming part is husking the corn, but this
is a great job for the kids. Some of Mister Spiffy's fondest
memories growing up was husking corn with his grandma.
Potato Bar
Bake a whole bunch of potatoes, and put a big pile of them at the
head of a table. Then line the table with fixins’ like sour cream,
chives, chili, cheese, bacon bits, salt, pepper, and other
seasonings. Oh, and butter... Mister Spiffy says don't forget the
butter. People just take a tater, mosey down the table putting on
what they want, and tada – you’ve got a meal.
Spaghetti
Spaghetti is one of those foods you can make in huge batches, but
it's also popular for it's entertainment value. Try having a
spaghetti dinner with no eating utensils – not even hands. You sit
on your hands and everyone just digs in with their faces. Have
someone walking the tables with a yardstick as punishment for
anyone who even lets their hands be seen by the guard.
Chili Cookoff
An activity and a food, all in one! Announce beforehand the
approaching chili cookoff. Have various families cook a big batch
of chili with their own recipe, then have some judges. Give awards
for tastiest, thickest, mildest ("what brand of ketchup is that?"),
and hottest ("oh my, that chili was hot – I hope I didn’t brain my
damage"). Finally, everybody dig in.
Sloppy Joes
Sloppy Joes are commonly served because they’re so easy to make.
Buy a bunch of Sloppy Joe mix, mix it all in a bowl, and give
everyone a bun. As they walk by, slap a blob of the mixture onto
their buns. And they’re yum-diddly-umptious, too. Mister Spiffy
says to make sure you have plenty of napkins... they ain't called
"sloppy" joes for nothing.
S’mores
S’mores are good. They’re really good. Marshmallows, chocolate
bars, and graham crackers... what a combo! Around a campfire, roast
your marshmallows. While they’re still hot and sticky, stack'em
this way... graham cracker on the bottom, then sticky melted
marshmallow, then a piece of chocolate, then another graham cracker.
You couldn’t ask for anything tastier in the cold mountains.
S’mores originated from the pleading, begging phrase, "I want some
more (often pronounced, S’more)."
